The Seamaster PLOPROF Is Simply Genius

Omega shows us once again why they are just so good at what they do. Introducing the Omega Seamaster PLOPROF 1200M. This watch looks like something out of an 80’s movie starring Arnold but, in fact, is packed with the newest innovations this superlative brand has to offer. The Seamaster line from Omega is arguably their best seller, simply due to their attention to detail and their foresight into the needs of those who wish to master the seas.

The Seamaster PLOPROF 1200M was originally launched in 1970 to be used by deep sea divers; back then it was only water resistant to 600 meters, so it was called the PLOPROF 600M. The name PLOPROF comes from the French words “Plongeur Professionnel” which translates to professional diver. Today, the watch has been given an update and fitted with Omega’s famous Co-axial Caliber 8500 automatic movement.

Co-axial movements have less friction than regular lever escapement movements which means that more energy is transferred to the balance roller. This equates to a more stable rate of vibrations and a better performance over time. All Co-axial movements are tested by the COSC and are proclaimed Chronometers. To put this achievement into perspective, only 5% of watches leaving Switzerland are Chronometer certified.

The PLOPROF is unmistakable with its uniquely shaped case and overall functionality. This timepiece carries the crown on the left side with a special protective buffer. To adjust the time and date, simply unscrew the crown which releases the buffer and pull out to the desired position. The Caliber 8500 movement also makes it possible for quick hour changes when moving through different time zones. At the 2 o’clock position, there is a button with an orange anodized aluminum ring. This button when pressed releases the bezel which can then be rotated in either direction. Once the bezel is set, the button is pressed again and this locks the bezel into place. This is an extremely important feature for divers who sometimes rely on their bezels to record elapsed time.

This watch from Omega has a lacquered black dial which features an applied Omega logo and indexes for the hour markers. Both the indexes and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova for readability under low light conditions. The minute hand is oversized on this model and is crafted from orange anodized aluminum. Located at the 4:30 position is a neat date aperture.

The PLOPROF comes with either a stainless steel meshed “Sharkproof” bracelet, black or orange rubber. As the name suggests, this watch carries a water resistance of 120 Bars (1200 meters). As with all watches fitted with Co-axial movements, this timepiece has a comprehensive 4 year manufacturer’s warranty. The Seamaster PLOPROF retails for USD $9,700 on the steel bracelet.
