The Watches of the Glashutte Original Caliber 37

Glashutte Original is a German watchmaking company that is renowned for presenting some pretty complicated watches, whose engineering speaks to functionality and sophisticated design. Since 1845, this manufacturer has created some very intricate mechanical movements for their watches. So, when they focused on chronographs with the Caliber 37, expectations from the the public at large was high. They certainly didn’t disappoint!

At Baselworld 2014, they debuted two new watches – the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date and Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date showcasing the delicately designed Calibre 37 chronograph in two similar variants – Calibre 37-01 and Calibre 37-02 accordingly.

The Senator Chronograph Panorama Date is offered in two different iterations. The first combines a 950 platinum case with a 925 silver handmade dial, while a combination of 18kt red gold and a lacquered silver grained dial was presented in another. The Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date series sports a squared cushion shaped case with a retro 70’s flair. These timepieces are offered in three different dial alternatives – galvanized ruthenium, silver, and blue.

The dial layout for the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date is actually quite attractive with chrono-hours and minutes at 12 and 3 respectively. The Chronograph seconds is indicated centrally, while the continuous seconds occupy the 9 position. On the platinum version there is a tachometric scale on the flange. The 18kt red gold version is very similar but doesn’t have the tachymeter. Both versions, however, do have the signature large double date window at 6 o’clock. The retro Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date carries a bi-compax dial layout with a date display at the 12 position.

In both the versions, the Calibre 37 chronograph features a column wheel mechanism. In order  to maintain the consistent Glashutte quality, the chronograph was completely designed and handcrafted in-house. Talking about the quality, Calibre 37 chronographs is comprised of 450 parts, 27 of  which are jewels. On top of this, the self-winding mechanical movement has 70 hours of power reserve. The free-sprung balance of these chronographs from Glashutte have a frequency of 28.800 VpH.
