Eterna has been around for a long time and has, over the years, been a solid watchmaker producing designs that have kept them in the top tiers of Swiss watchmaking. The KonTiki Date from Eterna shows off the brand’s know how while celebrating the life and famous 1947 voyage of Thor Heyerdahl.
Thor Heyerdahl once sailed over 5,000 miles from South America to the Tuamotu Islands on a self-made raft (the Kon-Tiki) demonstrating that ancient people could have made long sea voyages. The main feature of the KonTiki is the dial which is a geographical contour map of the Roroia atoll structure that Thor’s raft came to rest on. Thor chose the name Kon-Tiki for his raft after the Incan Sun god.
This model is water resistant to a depth of 200 meters (20 ATM) due to the screwed down crown and screwed in case back. The case back also features the Kon-Tiki medallion. The case itself is crafted from brushed and polished stainless steel with dimensions of 42mm for the diameter and 12.35mm for the case height. The Kontiki Date has a polished bezel which holds firmly the scratch resistant sapphire crystal which is glare proofed on both sides.
The dial on this intrepid timepiece features 4 Arabic numerals in rhodium colored triangles reminiscent of a compass. Both the indexes and the Arabic numeral hour markers are coated with lume for enhanced readability during low light conditions. The large rhodiumed hands taper nicely, while the seconds hand carries a red tip for quick referencing. The date aperture is located at the 4:30 position putting the finishing touches on this most attractive watch.
The movement used in this model is the self-winding Sellita Caliber SW200. This movement beats at a constant 28,800vph and has a minimum power reserve of 38 hours. These watches come with your choice of stainless steel, leather, or rubber. Eterna offers a standard 2 year guarantee on the KonTiki models which retail at USD$2,700.
