The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona

The new Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona from Rolex is a breathtaking example of this brand’s keen eye for horological perfection. This iconic watch first graced the world stage in 1963, exactly 50 years ago this year.

The Daytona featured here is sculpted from solid 950 platinum and carries a case diameter of 40mm which is an ideal size for most men. The Oyster case was first released by Rolex in 1926, where it was noted as the world’s first waterproof case for a wristwatch. This was due to a patent by Rolex where the bezel was screwed down in addition to the case back and winding crown. This system protects the movement from water, dust, and pressure.

The unique bezel comes in a shiny metallic brown and is made from Cerachrom. The Cerachrom bezel is made from ceramic and features a tachometric scale. Tachymeters work in accordance with the chronograph to determine average speed over a given distance. The bezel is highly readable due to the white engraved units per hour markings.

The Cosmograph Daytona is fitted with a self-winding movement Calibre 4130 which indicates hours, minutes, small seconds, and a chronograph. The movement is manufactured in house in Rolex’s state-of-the-art workshops. As with all Rolex watches, the Cosmograph Daytona has been certified a chronometer by the COSC after undergoing 14 days and 15 nights of vigorous testing, ensuring that this watch is the quintessence of accuracy. This superlative chronograph movement also features a Parachron hairspring which delivers exceptional resistance to shocks and temperature variations.

The dial is hued a stunning ice blue and features applied indexes for the hour markers and brown rimmed counters at 3, 6, and 9. The hands and hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova for legibility is low light conditions. This model carries the famous Oyster three piece links that has made the Cosmograph Daytona such a legend.  The bracelet is fitted with the Oyster lock folding clasp which prevents unintentional openings and the Easylink comfort extension link which are both exclusive to Rolex.

This watch retails globally for £50,100.
