Review of the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Tourbillon Handwerkskunst

Perhaps the Lange 1 is the most easily recognizable collection from A. Lange & Söhne inventory, and for good reason. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Lange 1 series. This year, the brand shows off the skill of the artisans by producing a handwerkskunst edition.

The term ‘handwerkskunst’ literally translates to ‘hand worked’ and one design is produced each year. Normally, the model produced is ornately engraved on the dial, but for its 20th edition Lange & Söhne has chosen to use a black enamel dial on 18kt white gold and leave the intricate engravings for the movement, which is revealed by the sapphire crystal exhibition case back. For those looking to snap up one of these fine creations, it may be wise to be expedient in purchasing, as there will only be 20 made in the world.

This model is made in 950 platinum (no surprise there), and measures in 38.5mm and 10.2mm, for the diameter and height respectively. The polished case is fitted with a black crocodile leather strap, and is secured with a deployant clasp, also made from platinum. The main crown is ridged to easily adjust the functions and wind the watch.

The dial is set up like most Lange 1 models with the off-center dial and large double date display. This timepiece also features a power reserve indicator in retrograde at the 3 position. Coming in at the 5:30 position is a tourbillon rotating every minute. The Roman numeral and diamond shaped hour markers are rhodium-toned for excellent contrast against the black dial. The hands are also rhodium-toned and beveled for a truly sophisticated look.

The movement is hand-wound mechanical caliber L961.3 made in Germany. The movement features an autonomy of 72 hours. The movement is hand engraved and features seven screwed gold chatons and two diamond endstones for the tourbillon. There is a ¾ main plate, which is crafted from the finest German silver.
