The Voutilainen Tourbillon-6

Definitely one of the stand out tourbillon timepieces for the year – the Voutilainen Tourbillon-6 is created by master watchmaker Kari Voutilainen. The design of the watch is geared towards formal with its highly polished and brushed 950 platinum case made in a conservative size of 39mm.

The Voutilainen Tourbillon-6 is made in an ultra-exclusive series of just 6 pieces (hence the name). This timepiece features a wide vaulted bezel that holds the scratch resistant sapphire crystal over the dial. The lugs are uniquely shaped and hold the luxuriant black alligator leather. The case back is made from transparent sapphire crystal showing off the manual wound movement.

The movement inside the Voutilainen Tourbillon-6 is completely assembled and finished in their workshops in Switzerland. This movement beats at a constant 18,000 VpH and carries a direct impulse escapement as was featured in the popular VR8 model. The movement is crafted from German steel, which has been made grey using a treatment process. The gear train, however, is made gold toned, which stands out really well against the grey background of the movement.

The dial is blue and manually engine turned to achieve the unique patterns across the dial. The main highlight of the case though comes in the large tourbillon found in an aperture at 6 o’clock. The tourbillon is also fitted with a small seconds indicator as the tourbillon no doubt makes one revolution every minute. Tourbillons work, essentially, by creating so many inaccuracies that they cancel each other out, therefore resulting in an accurate rate of time.

The hands are rhodium toned with blued steel circles just below the arrow head pointers. The indexes are also rhodium toned, which contrast well against the dial allowing the time to be read quite easily. As a dress watch there is no trace of lume on the dial and a date display is omitted in an effort to maintain the dial symmetry of the Voutilainen Tourbillon-6.
