The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date or the President’s for short was first released to the world in 1956 and was given as a gift to then President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower by Rolex. Since then, this stellar collection has been worn by many of the world’s most iconic figures. The watch was the first to feature the day fully spelled out in an aperture at 12 o’clock.
This series is only produced in precious metals (18kt gold, and platinum), which serve to underscore the watch’s significance. The case size of the watch featured here is 36mm. This size presents an exceptional wrist presence for ladies without being too bulky and cumbersome for daily wear. The bezel is fluted adding a sporty aesthetic to this model. The case in its entirety is sculpted from a single block of 18kt Everose gold, which has been brushed to a fine finish. The case also boasts a screw locked main crown and a screwed in case back, which both work together to ensure that the 100 meter water resistance is maintained.
The chocolate brown dial features 8 diamonds, and two baguette cut, pigeon blood rubies at the 6 and 9 positions. At 3 is date aperture, which is magnified some 2 ½ times by the convex lens on the anti-reflective sapphire crystal that protects the dial. As mentioned before, the day of the week is spelled out in full at 12. Everose gold toned hands contrast well against the dial optimizing legibility.
Powering this series is the self-winding caliber 3155, which has been certified by the COSC as a chronometer. Only 5% of watches leaving Switzerland can boast this accreditation. The hairspring is made from blue Parachrom so as not to be affected by magnetic fields. The oscillating mass winds the watch in both directions, making sure that this exquisite timepiece is always fully powered.
