The Perrelet Turbine Pilot

The Perrelet Turbine Pilot is this watch brand’s latest aviation inspired creation. We’re all familiar with aviation themed timepieces and what we should expect but this model goes against the grain in many of its aesthetic values, whether this is a good move or not remains to be seen.

As far as I can tell, the Turbine Pilot from a functional standpoint is packed with some real goodies like the circular slide rule that is gaining in popularity after Breitling developed it in the 50’s. Slide rules work off of an algorithmic scale, which enables the wearer to calculate any rule of three equation such as rates of ascent and descent, fuel consumption, and distance – just to name a few.

The Perrelet Turbine Pilot is made from black PVD coated stainless steel, which not only strengthens the steel but also looks great and the affirms the rugged aesthetic of this timepiece. The case carries a case diameter of 48mm and a case height of 13.65mm, giving this model a great wrist presence. The bidirectional bezel governing the slide rule is controlled by the textured crown at the 3 position. For setting the time, there is an integrated main crown at 9 o’clock on the case. The Turbine Pilot is outfitted with either a black calfskin with grey contrast stitching, or a black rubber strap. Both strap options are fastened with traditional pin buckles made from black PVD steel. Water resistance on this model stands at 5 ATM or 50 meters.

The distinctive dial features 3 layers: the hands and hour markers, the turbine made with 12 titanium blades, and a black background with diagonal yellow stripes at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 positions. The luminous hands and hour markers seem to float but in fact are situated on a transparent sapphire dial. Another sapphire crystal above this makes up the dial covering, while yet another is placed on the case back so that the automatic P-331 movement can be seen and admired with its Côtes de Genève markings and hollowed oscillating weight.
