The Omega Speedmaster Mark II

Inspired by the original watch that went to the moon, Omega is proud to re-release this classic – the Speedmaster Mark II. This timepiece is aesthetically very similar to the watch from 1969 thus capturing a spirit of watchmaking that is quite rare in today’s horological landscape. The 2014 Speedmaster Mark II carries an automatic movement, whereas the model from the 60’s was hand wound. A manual wound caliber was strategically chosen as the oscillating rotor in an automatic would not have the aid of gravity to wind the watch.

The movement in this model is called the Omega Co-Axial caliber 3300. The caliber 3300 is fitted with a column wheel mechanism, which allows the chronograph to start smoothly instead of jerking forward. This self-winding movement features a Si14 balance made from non-ferromagnetic materials ensuring that electro-magnetic fields do not interfere with the overall accuracy of the watch. Another guarantor of accuracy is the usage of the Co-Axial escapements as opposed to the regular lever escapements found in so many other brands. The Co-Axial escapement is exclusive to Omega and the brand is so confident of its exceptional craftsmanship that it offers an amazing 4 year warranty valid from the date of purchase.

The masterfully constructed stainless steel case is both polished and brushed, and it features a date corrector at the 10 position. Omega also provides a Push Piece tool to aid in this endeavor. Probably the most notable aspect of this watch is its tachometric scale on the bezel. For the first time Omega uses lume so that it is visible under any and all lighting. Also coated with Super-LumiNova are the minute and hour hand and the central chronograph hand.

The matte grey dial features a chronograph whose counters are indicated by a striking orange hand. At the 9 position is the continuous seconds subdial. At 6 o’clock is a neat date aperture. Protecting the dial is a sapphire crystal selected by Omega because of its scratch resistant properties. The Omega Speedmaster Mark II is water resistant to 100 meters or 10 ATM.
