The Chanel J12 Chronograph

When most people think Chanel, horological excellence is probably not the first thing to come to mind but this fashion forward brand has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are as relevant in the world of watchmaking as they are on the runways of London, Paris, and New York.

Chanel launched the J12 collection over half a decade ago and at one point it was hottest commodity for ladies on the market. Much has stayed the same as the J12 still enjoys a very loyal following. Chanel doesn’t just stamp its name on a watch; in fact, the brand takes great care to provide one of the most reliable and functionally sound watches available for women. Even the diamonds used are top quality. In short, it is quite clear that Chanel has raised the bar on the standards of watchmaking for the fairer sex.

The chronograph version of the J12 is made from ceramic, which comes in either a black or a white version. Chanel chooses ceramic as it is virtually 100% scratch resistant, light, and times stronger than stainless steel. Apart from Rado, Chanel was one of the only watchmakers that produced a series of watches strictly in ceramic. Only the notched unidirectional bezel and the chrono pushers and screw locked main crown are produced in stainless steel. The J12 Chronograph is made in a size of 41mm which can work for both men and women. The bracelet is also made from ceramic and features a triple deployant clasp in stainless steel.

The dial is wonderfully legible with its Arabic numeral or diamond hour markers. At the 3 position is the small seconds subdial, while at the 6 and 9 resides the hours and minutes chronograph totalizers respectively. This chronograph can time any event up to 12 hours. The chrono seconds is indicated via a central hand. On the flange and on the hands are luminous elements making for perfect nighttime readability. The date is displayed through an aperture located at the 4:30 position.

The J12 Chronograph is fitted with a mechanical self-winding movement, which has been officially certified as a chronometer by the COSC. COSC certified chronometers are seen by many as the standard of excellence where Swiss watchmaking is concerned. This model is fitted with a cool 42 hours of power reserve. The Chanel J12 Chronograph boasts a water resistance of 200 meters, which makes this watch perfect for daily wear.
