Franck Muller Thunderbolt Tourbillon

The Franck Muller Thunderbolt Tourbillon was first unveiled to the world in 2012 at a special gala event in Monaco called the World Premiere of Haute Horlogerie (WPHH). Scores of invitees came to witness this true masterpiece from Franck Muller being unveiled.

The Thunderbolt Tourbillon is unique in the world as it possesses a tourbillon complication that makes a full revolution once every 5 seconds, lending to the apt Thunderbolt moniker. This is by far the fastest tourbillon in the world beating its nearest rival by a factor of 12. This movement took over three years of R&D and was created by master watchmaker Pierre-Michele Golay and his team.

As expected this movement is hand wound and it features a 60 hour power reserve. The FM2025T caliber is fitted with an unprecedented 4 barrels that power the tourbillon allowing it achieve the lightning fast speeds. The tourbillon is also able to make 12 rotations every minute due to the ceramic ball bearing upon which it moves.

At first glance, the case shape appears to be tonneau but the curved design reveals it to be a Cintree Curvex – a modification from Franck Muller. This Cintree Curvex shape is quite large with a dimension of 55.05mm top to bottom and it is sculpted from 18kt white gold that has been satin finished. Franck Muller chooses to grace this model with a black alligator leather strap fitted with a folding clasp.

The dial is skeletonized revealing Franck Muller’s full array of techniques when it comes to the decoration of the movement. At the 6 position resides the Thunderbolt Tourbillon complication in gold tone and decorated with an ‘M’ in black steel. The hands are also made from black steel offering good contrast against the skeletonized dial.
