The Amazing Christophe Claret X-Trem-1

The Christophe Claret X-Trem-1, at first glance, seems like something straight out of a sci-fi movie with its unique character and array of complications. One is almost waiting to hear Lt. Commander Worf say phasers are set to stun or Obi-Wan comment that these aren’t the droids you are looking for. The name is actually a clever acronym while being a shortened form of the word ‘extreme’. The acronym goes like this:

X – Experimental

T – Time

R – Research

E – Engineering

M – Mechanism

This model is offered in three versions – 18kt white gold with PVD anthracite coating, 18kt rose gold with PVD anthracite coating, and platinum with PVD grade 5 titanium. Each of the models detailed is made in a limited series of just 8 watches. The case back is bead blasted titanium, while the case middle is satin finished. The precious metal tops are polished, which looks great against the dark anthracite or grade 5 titanium.

Essentially, the X-Trem-1 is a rectangular watch but is has a curvex profiles. Its case features dimensions of 40.8mm X 56.8mm X 15mm. This is a very large watch by any standard and so has a wrist presence that is unlikely to be paralleled.

The case back features pull out ‘bows’ for the setting of the time and for the winding of the watch. Just above and below are two apertures that display the movement and the tourbillon mechanism respectively. At the 12 position on the case is an integrated pusher that allows for a fast time change.

Strap options are hand sewn black alligator leather and rubber touched black leather. Due to an innovative screw mechanism the Christophe Claret X-Trem-1 makes strap changes rather easy for full control of the look on this versatile timepiece. The straps are secured using a folding clasp made from titanium. Completing this model is a flying tourbillon mechanism at the 6 position. The tourbillon is vaulted at a 30° angle, which is generally thought to be the best position for a tourbillon.

The dial is completely transparent with only Christophe Claret’s logo and name on the sapphire crystal. The time is told in a truly unique fashion using two 4mm balls which travel up and down two graduated scales – one for the hours and one for the minutes, located on either side of the watch. This works by using precisely shaped magnetic fields to manipulate the balls. As such there are no mechanical connections btween the movement and the balls. This is a truly amazing feat from this watchmaking genius. To maintain legibility at night, there is Super-LumiNova® on the scales.

The movement on this watch is the FLY11, which carries a power reserve of at least 50 hours. The movement features double barrels for the time and for the tourbillon so that the energy is evenly distributed. This model features a traditional lever escapement and a balance wheel that alternates at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The tourbillon rotates once every 60 seconds. The FLY11 movement features an astounding 419 individual parts.
