Maurice LaCroix Masterpiece Seconde Mysterieuse

Back in 2013, Maurice LaCroix released one of their Masterpieces for Baselworld. A watch loosely based on the same principle as the Mystery Clocks from Cartier that were popular in the late 1800’s. The Maurice LaCroix Seconde Mysterieuse, though unveiled early 2013 was not actually up for sale until the last quarter of 2013, making this watch still a relatively new and newsworthy piece.

This spellbinding timepiece comes in only two versions – one made with a rhodium finish, and the second ruthenium finish. Both metals used in the finishing are from the Platinum line of metals on the periodic table and so naturally are both hypoallergenic. There will only be 125 pieces made of each version.

The case comes in a 43mm case diameter, making for a well sized timepiece. It should be pointed out that the rhodium and ruthenium cover a stainless steel frame. The ruthenium version is made matte black, while the rhodium finished version features a gleaming finish. The main crown is noticeable and uses a ridged center for the winding and setting of the time. The bezel holds securely a scratch resistant domed sapphire crystal, which has been glare proofed on both sides. The case back also carries a sapphire crystal where the watch exhibits the superbly crafted movement. This timepiece is made water resistant to 50 meters (5 bars). Adorning the Masterpiece Seconde Mysterieuse is a black, shiny crocodile leather strap for the ruthenium version, or a brown crocodile strap for the rhodium finished edition.

The complication that sets this timepiece apart is the Seconde Mysterieuse or Mysterious Seconds. At first glance, the seconds indicator seems to be dislodged and simply floating around in the massive subdial at 6 o’clock. However, upon closer inspection, it can be seen that the seconds indicator isn’t moving at all, what moves is the dial. The rest of the dial is open-worked revealing the movement. At the 1 position is an off-set dial, which is responsible for the display of the hours and minutes.

Powering this watch is the ML215, which happens to be self-winding. This automatic movement carries a power reserve of 50 hours and is fitted with 48 jewels. The ML215 vibrates at 18,000 alternations per hour and is decorated with either ruthenium finishing or rhodium finishing depending on the model. Also for decoration on this gorgeous watch are vertical Cotes de Genève stripes.
